Liam Welton,

Author of The Nomad and the Lake

Please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your background.

My Name is Liam Welton, I'm 19 years old and am a film student currently residing in the North-east of England. I am, for the most part, Pagan - though I won't go so far as to say I'm devout, but doing my best. I'm a film fan and like Folk-rock music.

What inspired you to start writing?

There was a story in me, the competition came along at just the right time. I don't believe in forcing creativity.

Who is one of your favorite authors?

Terry Pratchett, a funny and beautiful writer.

What are some of your favorite books?

Reaper man (Terry Pratchett), The Hobbit (J.R.R Tolkein), Midnight Falcon (David Gemmell)

Give us a one sentence description of your winning story.

A tale of love, loss, sacrifice and acsention.

Besides writing, what are some of your hobbies or interests?

I love making films and composing music and combine the two by writing the soundtracks for my own films.

Are you a gamer? Any favorite games?

I'm a casual gamer. Currently playing World of Warcraft a lot, but a real favourite of mine is Prince of Persia: Warrior Within - so cool, fun and amazing music.

What is your favorite type of music?

Folk Rock eg. Jethro Tull, Skyclad, Elvenking.

How long have you been writing?

I don't really write regularly, but the first piece of writing I would have done really would be the script I co-wrote with my friend about 6-7 years ago.

What kind of stories do you most enjoy writing?

Fantasy, set in a time and place other than our own. I have to live in the real world often enough, I don't want to have to write about it as well.

When you sit down to write a story, do you know where you are going or do you “see where the pen takes you”?

Hmm, I know the beginning and I sort of know the end and I try to join the two together. Usually, along the way the end result becomes distorted, but that's the nature of the beast.

What has been your biggest learning tool or experience as far as writing is concerned?

I'm blessed to have very creative friends who support and nurture my ideas and feed my imagination - truly the most useful tool to any artist.
