Now that Jason has returned to Blizzard and he's contributed to Heart of the Swarm (HotS), I can only wonder whether or not he'd be the lead composer of the next expansion set, Legacy of the Void (LotV). After all LotV deals with the Protoss, and Jason was the composer of their music in the original.

Jason, if you are reading this, could you tell us about your involvement in HotS, and whether or not we can expect to hear more of your music in LotV?

According to vgmdb.net, the forthcoming soundtrack album for "StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm" will feature a cue by Jason, titled "Conscience"! Fantastic!

By now I think it is apparent that Jason is solely working on Blizzard's secret new project, commonly referred to as "Titan". Otherwise we would have seen a cue or two by him on the new WoW expansion set.

I wonder if we ever get to hear any more of Jason's compositions for Wildstar (assuming this was the title he was involved with during his years at Carbine Studio).

Having gone through much of the music for the game I must say I am completely speechless. This expansion set has by far the best music in the series since the original game launched. Neal Acree's cues totally steal the show! Bravo!

Fantastic news! Now, how about a complete rewrite of the Protoss music in StarCraft II for the next expansion? :-P

So, what does everyone think about the music in the beta so far? It is a major departure from the usual tunes they craft for these games. Personally I am loving all the Asian flavors in the cues that are currently in place. There doesn't seem to be any new overture styled music for the login screen yet, but I am craving for one. Can't wait for the album!

Haven't checked Amazon recently but I seem to remember that, at the time of release, most people were disappointed by Blizzard's decision to split the single player campaign into three separate games; and the lack of LAN support. I guess nobody was expecting Blizzard to act like this. A friend told me at the time that, at this rate, he won't be surprised if we see something similar for Diablo 3. One act per game? Let's hope not.

Personally I'd skip any gameplay criticism though. Those Blizzard guys have done really well there. Can't wait to get my hands on Heart of the Swarm.

To my surprise they have actually credited Jason this time for the opening suite, The Shattering. I guess this board has some visibility after all!

I asked a friend who is an avid WoW player to show me around some of the zones that have gotten a "face lift" in Cataclysm. It was an interesting experience since I stopped playing WoW shortly before they released the first expansion set, so there was so much to see and reminisce with. There, I couldn't help but notice that many of Jason's original compositions are still in place, albeit re-recorded with live instruments or slightly re-arranged. Good to see that these tones have stood the test of time.

About time I bumped this thread up. I don't think there is much to explain as the thread title says it all. I hope some announcement is made by Jason soon. Those Carbine guys have been working on, whatever it is that they are working on, for far too long now. Shame that WikiLeaks is only interested in political stuff really.

I visit Carbine's website every now and then and I must say the artworks they have posted on their website are absolutely fantastic. Can't wait to see what Jason has come up with for that concept (beyond those short promotional clips they have posted, of course).

Thanks for the heads up. Pretty good stuff indeed. And 12 minutes! For Menu Screen? Whoa.

Hope he gets compensated..

Doubt so. They weren't even bothered to give him credit in StarCraft 2 soundtrack booklet, even though they used several segments of his compositions.

Blizzard has stated the Zerg and Protoss episodes will be full games on their own, and not mere expansions.

Well, that part from Blizzard does not exactly read like "they will be priced like full games". But if that is indeed their decision, I am sure they will have a hard time convincing fans that a few extra units and campaign missions are worth that price, especially given the current reactions to the base game's price tag. Best wait and see.

I don't know about extracting the music from the game using editors or whatever.  That sounds like a lot of work.

The tool I mentioned is the map editor that comes with the game. If you take a good look around the program, you should be able to find a Sound Editor sort of option with which you can extract pretty much all the sounds.

I really have to believe they did hold some music back.  Especially Zerg music because what is in there for them right now is pure garbage and I have no idea why they would do that to the poor zerg.

The Zerg have 9 music tracks already. Unless they plan on replacing the whole thing in the forthcoming packs, which I doubt they do, I cannot really see how there could be a sudden shift in style, even if there are indeed music tracks that are kept for later use.

but they didn't do much with Protoss or Zerg.  I know they are saving all the cool toss and zerg stuff for the upcoming 60 dollar expansions,

Didn't they say the two expansion packs will be priced at a normal EP rate? I am not sure how they could overcharge for just a few campaign missions and unites, especially after all the complaints about the base SC2's price, and some of its controversial features.

As for keeping the goodies for a later date, I doubt they have done more music than what we are hearing in the final product. Seeing that they added most of the Protoss music only in the retail game, and not in the beta which ended only a month before the game had gone gold, I think it is safe to assume that those guys have their hands full with World of WarCraft, its patches, the upcoming expansion, and maybe even some BlizzCon related stuff too. We all know just how much new music WoW needs alone, especially in Cataclysm where they pretty much have to re-score most of the game. And Cataclysm is targeting a 2010 release too. Let's give those guys a break!

In 2 years, after you have spent 300 on 3 collectors editions, you will finally have in your hands the complete Starcraft 2 OST, and I am confident it will be awesome.

You won't need the CE for that. All the music can be extracted from the game's files using the provided StarCraft II Editor.

I have been playing the game for a while now. Anything from the moment a match/mission is started is absolutely impressive. Music is great, graphics are eye-popping, voice acting is superb, gameplay is awesome; That's just about anything I would have expected from Blizzard. There does seem to be some lack of originality in the overall product, but gladly it is never offensive.

I'd say the music is no way up-par with the original, but I'm glad that it does not sound like "World of WarCraft in StarCraft". At least not to me.
14  Music By Jason Forums / Game Music Discussion / Re: StarCraft 2 (music of course) on: July 24, 2010, 05:05:02 AM
I am hearing that they have re-recorded that opera piece in Brood War's Intro (Requiem) for the sequel and that it is included on the soundtrack album that comes with collector's edition, somewhere in the middle of a track, titled "I, Mengsk". Add this to the overture piece discussed earlier and it appears that most of Jason's music for the original game was carried over for the sequel in one form or another. I also read that several cues are rearranged versions of well-known movie soundtracks too.

Weird lack of originality here. Has temp-tracking reached the video game music industry?

At least some updates are happening there. Cool! Cheesy
