so it's a viola. What else accompanying it right at 1:26? I'm just eager to to know what produced such beautiful sound.

If I remember correctly, one of the Brandenburgs features violas, no?  That might be a good place to look.  Or was it just that violas held the bass in one?  I forget.

It's not just "a" viola, it's the sound of 10 or more violas playing in unison.
